Writing + Research

I'm interested in how computing classrooms can make more space for students' identities, languages, cultures, creativity, and knowledge. The questions I care about come directly from my teaching, and my recent research has grown out of an ongoing collaboration with the University of Washington's Center for Learning, Computing, and Imagination.

An Autoethnography of Culturally Sustaining CS Teaching in a Multilingual, Multicultural Middle School Classroom

Over two years, we designed, taught, and revised a creative coding unit using Wordplay with middle school students. Through teaching journals, lesson plans, and reflections on student feedback, we explored how culturally responsive and sustaining teaching practices developed through classroom experience. We found opportunities for identiy expression, language as a cultural resources, and student participation in a programming lanugage community that emerged through teaching and reflection.

Adolescent Identity Expression through Transdisciplinary, Computational, Creative Writing

In a six-week course with high school students, we combined creative writing and creative coding using Wordplay, a programming language for creating multilingual interactive typography. We found that students used code to express aspects of their identities that text alone couldn't capture, while the integration also created new pathways between writing and computing.
